The complete 2026 guide to Australian beef tallow skincare: what it is, the fatty acid science, how to apply it, who it's for, and how to choose. Written by Ayla, founder of DAEAR.
What Is Beef Tallow Skincare?
Beef tallow skincare is skincare formulated with rendered beef fat as the primary lipid base. The fat is slow-rendered from grass-fed cattle, filtered, and blended with botanical extracts, carrier oils and (sometimes) essential oils. The result is a deeply nourishing, biologically familiar moisturiser that the skin recognises and integrates rather than resists.
For a deeper introduction, see our "What Is Tallow Skincare" guide.
Why Australian Beef Tallow?
Three reasons Australian beef tallow has become the global standard:
- Grass-fed is the norm, not the exception. Most Australian beef cattle are raised on pasture, which means a healthier fatty acid profile, higher CLA content, and more vitamins A, D, E and K.
- Traceability is straightforward. Australian beef supply chains are short and the meat industry is heavily regulated. You can know where your tallow comes from.
- The native botanical pairing is unique. Australian-formulated tallow skincare can pair the lipid base with native superfruits — Kakadu plum, quandong, Davidson plum, finger lime — that are unavailable in the Northern Hemisphere.
At DAEAR our tallow is sourced from Australian grass-fed and grass-finished cattle, slow-rendered at low temperatures, and hand-formulated in Queensland.
The Science: Why Tallow Works
The simple version: your skin recognises tallow because tallow's fatty acid profile is structurally similar to your skin's own sebum.
The lipids in grass-fed beef tallow:
- Oleic acid — also present in human sebum. Conditions and softens.
- Palmitic acid — a major component of the stratum corneum (the outer skin barrier).
- Stearic acid — strengthens the barrier and locks in hydration.
- CLA (conjugated linoleic acid) — anti-inflammatory.
- Fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E, K — absorb directly through the lipid pathway, not the water phase.

Who Is Tallow Skincare For?
Dry, sensitive or barrier-compromised skin
The original use case. Tallow's lipid match makes it one of the most easily-tolerated moisturisers available. Browse our sensitive skin range.
Eczema-prone skin
The fatty acid profile soothes flare-ups without irritants. See our tallow for eczema guide.
Acne-prone skin
Counterintuitive but well-documented — tallow's comedogenic rating is approximately 2/5, comparable to jojoba. It tends to balance sebum rather than overload it. Tallow for acne-prone skin guide.
Mature and menopausal skin
Hormonal change accelerates barrier loss. Tallow replaces the lipids the skin is losing. Menopausal dry skin guide.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
When formulated without essential oils. Our Scent-Free Tallow Balm is the formulation we recommend. Pregnancy-safe skincare guide.
How to Use Tallow Skincare: The DAEAR Three-Step Ritual
Step 1: Cleanse — with the Honey Oil Cleanser, leaving skin slightly damp.
Step 2: Nourish — press 2–3 drops of Dew Drops Barrier Oil into damp skin.
Step 3: Seal — warm a pea-sized amount of tallow balm between your fingers, press onto damp skin.
For the full breakdown see How to Use Tallow Balm.
Tallow Balm or Tallow Cream: How to Choose
The short version: balm for the deepest nourishment (best at night, on dry/sensitive skin), cream for daytime wear (lighter, sits under SPF). Most DAEAR customers use both.

Common Questions About Beef Tallow Skincare
Does tallow smell?
High-quality grass-fed tallow has a very faint, almost neutral scent. The Earth balm adds frankincense, cedarwood and ho leaf essential oils. The Lavender adds true lavender. The Scent-Free is unscented.
Is it safe in pregnancy?
The Scent-Free version is. The Earth and Lavender contain essential oils that should be patch-tested or paused during pregnancy.
Is it sustainable?
Tallow is a by-product of an existing meat industry. Using it for skincare means more of the animal is used rather than wasted.
Will it block my pores?
Tallow's comedogenic rating is approximately 2/5. For most skin types it does not block pores. Read the acne and tallow guide.
