How to Use Tallow Balm: Your Skincare Ritual, Step by Step

The step-by-step DAEAR ritual for applying tallow balm. Damp skin, warm fingers, slow application. The application is half the result.

The Three-Step DAEAR Ritual

Tallow balm is a finishing step, not a complete routine. The DAEAR approach is built around three steps:

  1. Cleanse — with the Honey Oil Cleanser
  2. Nourish — with Dew Drops Barrier Oil
  3. Seal — with your tallow balm

You don't need all three to start. Many DAEAR customers begin with just the tallow balm and add the others gradually. Below is the full ritual with the balm as the closing step.

How to Apply Tallow Balm: Step by Step

Step 1: Cleanse

Apply 2–3 pumps of the Honey Oil Cleanser to dry skin. Massage in circles for 30 seconds — the oil dissolves makeup, SPF and the day's grime. Add water, and the formula emulsifies into a soft milk. Rinse with lukewarm water and pat dry, leaving the skin slightly damp.

If you prefer a soap, the Herbal Tallow Soap is an alternative cleanse step.

Step 2: Nourish

Press 2–3 drops of Dew Drops Barrier Oil into damp skin. Press, don't rub — the warmth from your fingertips helps the oil absorb cleanly. The damp skin draws the oil in rather than letting it sit on the surface.

Step 3: Seal (the tallow balm step)

Scoop a pea-sized amount of tallow balm — use the Gold Skincare Spatula to keep the jar clean. Warm the balm between your fingertips for 5–10 seconds. It will go from solid to soft, almost oil-like.

Press into damp skin, starting at the cheeks and working outward. Don't rub. Press, then sweep gently. The balm should disappear within a minute.

The Four Things People Get Wrong

1. Applying to dry skin

Tallow balm on dry skin sits on top. Tallow balm on damp skin integrates. Apply within 30 seconds of patting your face dry.

2. Using too much

A pea-sized amount covers the whole face. More than that won't absorb — it will just sit on the surface and feel heavy. Less is more.

3. Not warming the balm

Cold balm doesn't spread evenly. Warm it between your fingertips for 5–10 seconds first. It should look almost liquid before it touches your skin.

4. Rubbing instead of pressing

Tallow rewards slow, intentional application. Press and sweep, don't rub.

When to Apply Tallow Balm

Morning — if you wear SPF, the Australian Botanical Cream sits more cleanly under sunscreen than a balm. Use the cream by day, the balm by night. If you don't wear SPF, the balm works morning and night.

Night — always. The night-time application is where most of the barrier repair happens.

Other moments — after long flights, after the beach, after retinol nights, the morning after a tear-stained evening, on chapped lips, on dry hands.

Which DAEAR Tallow Balm Should You Use?

  • Earth Tallow Balm — the rich, botanically-infused bestseller. Best for dry skin and mature skin.
  • Lavender Tallow Balm — calming, evening-only application. Best for the wind-down ritual.
  • Scent-Free Tallow Balm — fragrance-free, pregnancy- and breastfeeding-safe. Best for sensitive and reactive skin.

Beyond the Face: Where Else to Apply Tallow Balm

Tallow balm works on more than just the face. Common uses:

  • Lips — dab a tiny amount on chapped lips
  • Cuticles — massage in nightly
  • Dry patches — elbows, knees, hands
  • Hair — a tiny amount on dry ends
  • Babies — the Scent-Free Balm only, on dry patches

For the body, the Glow Tallow Body Butter is the larger format.

FAQs

How long does the balm take to absorb?

On damp skin with the correct amount (pea-sized), about 60 seconds. If it's not absorbing, you're using too much.

Can I apply makeup on top?

Yes, but allow 5–10 minutes for the balm to settle. For under-SPF wear, the lighter Australian Botanical Cream works better.

Will it clog my pores?

Tallow's comedogenic rating is approximately 2/5 — similar to jojoba oil. For most skin types it does not clog pores. See the tallow for acne guide.

Can I use tallow balm under my eyes?

Yes. Use a smaller amount and press gently. The Scent-Free version is the safest around delicate eye skin.
