Tallow Balm vs Tallow Cream: What's the Difference?

If you're new to tallow skincare and trying to decide between a balm and a cream, this is the article. Both are tallow-based, both nourish deeply — but they behave very differently on skin.

The Short Answer

Tallow balm is anhydrous — no water phase. It is concentrated, sealing, and best applied to damp skin for the deepest barrier work. Tallow cream is a water-in-oil emulsion — lighter, faster-absorbing, and easier to wear under SPF or makeup.

Most DAEAR customers end up using both: a tallow balm in the evening for the deepest seal, and a tallow cream by day for a lighter finish. Shop tallow balms here and tallow cream here.

What Is a Tallow Balm?

A tallow balm is an anhydrous formulation — meaning it contains no water. It is built on a base of slow-rendered grass-fed beef tallow combined with carrier oils (jojoba, sacha inchi, apricot kernel) and natural waxes (beeswax). No water means no preservatives are needed, and no synthetic emulsifiers are required to bind oil and water.

The texture is solid-to-semi-solid in the jar and melts on contact with skin warmth. A small scoop — pea-sized for the face, almond-sized for the body — covers far more skin than its size suggests.

Best for: dry skin, eczema-prone skin, mature skin, compromised barriers, night-time use, very dry climates.

What Is a Tallow Cream?

A tallow cream is a water-in-oil emulsion. It contains both an oil phase (tallow plus carrier oils) and a small water phase, bound together with a natural emulsifier and a preservative system.

The texture is lighter — closer to a traditional moisturiser. It absorbs in seconds, leaves no greasy residue, and sits cleanly under SPF, makeup or sunscreen.

Best for: daytime use, combination skin, oily-feeling skin in warmer months, wearing under SPF or makeup, lighter texture preferences.

How to Choose for Your Skin Type

If you have very dry, mature, or barrier-compromised skin — start with the balm. The concentrated lipid delivery is what your skin is asking for. The Scent-Free version is the safest starting point if your skin is reactive.

If you have combination or oily-feeling skin — start with the cream. The lighter format gives you tallow's benefits without the heavier finish. The Australian Botanical Cream sits beautifully under SPF.

If you have acne-prone skin — either works, but the cream is often gentler to start with. See our tallow for acne-prone skin guide.

If you're pregnant or breastfeeding — the Scent-Free Balm is the formulation we recommend. See the pregnancy-safe skincare guide.

Can You Use Both?

Yes — and most DAEAR customers do. The typical pairing:

  • Day: Tallow cream under SPF
  • Night: Tallow balm as the final sealing step

You can also seasonally rotate — cream in summer when the skin wants lighter, balm in winter when the skin wants heavier.

The Most Common Way to Buy Both Together

If you want to start with the full tallow ritual, the DAEAR Tallow Skincare Set includes the cleanser, oil and a tallow balm in one bundle. Or for face and body coverage, the Face & Body Tallow Balm Bundle pairs the lightweight cream with the body lotion.

FAQs

Which lasts longer in the jar?

The balm. Because it's anhydrous, a 50g jar lasts approximately 3 months with daily facial use. A 200g body butter lasts 3–4 months.

Which has more tallow?

The balm. Anhydrous formulas are typically 60–80% tallow by weight. Tallow creams are typically 20–40% tallow because of the water phase.

Which is better for sensitive skin?

Generally, the balm — because the ingredient list is shorter and there's no water or preservative system. The Scent-Free Balm is the simplest formulation in the DAEAR range.

Do they both contain Australian grass-fed tallow?

Yes — the tallow base is consistent across the DAEAR range. The differences are in the surrounding formulation.
